Work to start on shopping centre gym

Capital & Regional will start work in the second half of this year on the £3m reconfiguration of the Mall Blackburn to make way for a 16,000 sq ft PureGym.

The project, designed by Colman Architects, will include amalgamating 10 existing retail units and expanding the entrance on Ainsworth Street. There will be additional escalators taking shoppers up to the first floor mall on Market Way. The reconfiguration of the north east section of the Mall is part of Capital & Regional’s strategy to enhance the leisure offer at the centre, which attracts over 13 million shoppers each year.

The 600,000 sq ft shopping centre, acquired by Capital & Regional in 2004, is let to over 100 occupiers, including Debenhams, Primark, Next, New Look, H&M, JD and Boots.

Earlier this week, Capital & Regional said the value of the Mall portfolio, comprising six wholly owned shopping centres, at 30 June 2015 was £791.0m, an increase of 6.2% on the valuation of £744.7m at 30 December 2014.
