Yu Property has started on the £6.5m redevelopment of Liverpool’s Salters Building in Pembroke Place into 94 studios.
YPG Developments, the construction arm of Yu Property, will build the six-storey 40,000 sq ft residential development. Salters Building, which contained the Royal George pub and a furniture store, will be demolished to make way for the new development.
The architect is Smith & McHugh. SCPO advised on planning. The application was initially refused before consent was secured on appeal. The council originally contested the size of the section 106 contribution for highways works.
Yu said more than half of the studios have already been sold off plan to investors.
The site is near Liverpool University, Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Lime Street station. Completion is due in July 2017.
Jonathan Yu, managing director of YPG, said: “We’re happy to announce construction work has now started on site to transform the Salters Building in Liverpool in to Pembroke Studios, a high quality student accommodation in the heart of the city’s Knowledge Quarter. With significant ongoing investment in the area including LJMU’s Copperas Hill development, the studios are ideally situated for students looking for modern, high-spec accommodation in the city centre.
“With over half of the studios sold off plan already, we expect even more interest as the building takes shape and our plans come to fruition.”
