Work on £8m archive centre in Cumbria starts this month

Quarmby Construction is set to begin work on Cumbria County Council's £8.2m archives centre at Petteril Bank, Carlisle.

As well as a new centre being built for the storage of archives, the project will involve the renovation and restoration of the existing building on the site, known as Lady Gillford's House.

The project received a 2007 Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £4.8m, which was the most awarded in Cumbria.

Construction work is expected to take a year to complete and is due to begin on 19 January. The building is due to open in autumn 2010.
