Work on £67m Wigan town centre complex starting in January

Wigan council expects work to start on a new library and swimming pool for the town in January next year, it's been confirmed.

The 25m pool and new library is being designed by the team behind the award-winning Brighton Library.

Wigan was granted £67m of PFI credits that means the private sector bears the initial building and running costs, which are paid back over 25 years using the government credits. Then the building belongs to the council.

The library building and one-stop shop is now expected to be complete in spring 2011, while the swimming pool building is still expected to be finished by the end of 2010.
