Work begins on third Airport City hotel

As Holiday Inn and Ibis Budget line up summer openings, MY Construction has started building a 412-bedroom Tribe hotel for Accor.

Once the 24-month build is complete, the nine-storey, 132,000 sq ft hotel will also include a restaurant and bar, a gym, and a crew lounge for airline staff.

London-based MY Construction was awarded the £42m contract by Airport City Manchester in 2021, with the hotel expected to be fully operational in Q1 2024.

The architect is sector specialist Dexter Moren Associates. Other professionals include Faithful + Gould, Aecom, Meinhardt, Rusupo and NBM.

Managing director Yoav Tal said, “During the past 16 years we’ve delivered over 2,500 keys of premium hotel developments across the country so it’s great to be working with the Airport City Manchester development team and Accor on building what will be the first TRIBE hotel in the UK.”

Built at the foot of the £6m pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting Airport City and Wythenshawe, Tribe forms part of a £250m hotel district that could offer a cluster of nine new properties offering more than 2,400 hotel rooms.

The 280-bed Holiday Inn and a 262-bed Ibis Budget are due to open in summer. BCEGI topped out the buildings in May 2021.

Gareth Jackson, group property managing director at Manchester Airports Group, said: “Seeing construction commence on our third hotel on-site is another fantastic landmark at Airport City Manchester.

“The hotel district is a key element of the development, providing a crucial amenity cluster between The Hut Group campus, the wider business district, and one of the UK’s busiest airports.

“Bringing TRIBE to site demonstrates our ongoing commitment to catering for those quality and forward-thinking brands looking for the scale, opportunity and connectivity that Airport City Manchester offers occupiers.”

Accor Group, which also includes Mercure, Sofitel and Novotel, launched the Tribe brand in 2019 to offer a “high-quality experience at an affordable price”.

Airport City Manchester is a joint venture partnership between Columbia Threadneedle Investments, Manchester Airports Group, Beijing Construction Engineering Group, and Greater Manchester Pension Fund. The £1bn Airport City project is to deliver 5m sq ft in total.
