Work advances on Knowsley sports centre

Balfour Beatty is close to completing the exterior of Knowsley's new £16m leisure and culture centre and is on track for it opening in September.

The large new centre will contain two swimming pools, sports hall, gym, dance studios, squash court, 400m outdoor cycling velodrome, BMX track, spa facilities, treatment rooms, a café and conference space.

The external cladding and windows are now almost complete. Internally, the partition walls and swimming pool areas are nearing completion and the lift has been fitted. Early works on the outdoor velodrome and international BMX track have also started.

Cllr Eddie Connor, cabinet member for leisure, community and culture, said: "The building has progressed rapidly and is now only four months away from opening. It will provide a wide range of new and exciting activities for everyone to enjoy. In addition, we will be able to host performances and events in the borough, providing even further opportunities for residents to spend their leisure and social time here in Knowsley."
