Woodford housing plans due out for consultation
Stockport and Cheshire East Councils will hold events next week to give residents their say on the proposed masterplan for the redevelopment of Woodford Aerodrome.
BAE Systems sold the site last year to Avro Heritage, a company controlled by JCB heir Joe Bamford. Avro has since formed a joint venture with Harrow Estates, part of Redrow Group.
Redrow said last month it planned an 800-unit 'garden village' on the previously developed industrial parts of Woodford. The majority of the site will remain as green space.
A spokesman for Stockport council said the plans would be unveiled at the first event on Friday 25 May.
Stockport and Cheshire East Councils will be asking for views on the proposed masterplan, which they say have been prepared with consideration for transport, planning, heritage, design and architecture. Representatives from both councils and Harrow Estates will be on hand to discuss the proposals and answer any questions.
There will be two public events:
- Friday 25 May, 2-7pm, Woodford Aerodrome, Chester Road, Woodford, Stockport SK7 1QR
- Saturday 26 May, 10am – 4pm, Poynton Civic Hall Off Park Lane, Poynton, Cheshire SK12 1RB
Residents will also be able to find out the next steps in the development process and how they can have their say. This includes the timetable for the councils' Supplementary Planning Document, which will guide development for the site and the consultation process going forward.
This will no doubt be a massive success but it would have been interesting to go down an architectural competition route and see whether an outstanding original garden village could have been created to really get the place on the map. Redrows eavesy boxes will sell well enough BUT

Imagination costs money

What on earth is a garden village? What does it actually mean? Sounds like a shallow PR device to enable Redrow to dump yet more of their unimaginative, dreary red boxes or as they would have it, their "new heritage collection" onto this prime site. I agree, an architectural competition should be the way to go.

wasn’t there talk about the site being developed in to a film studio or was my imagination playing tricks Mr Bond? A large development such as this must be done sympathetically regarding style, space standards and correct mix of property types to suit the location.
