Willmott Dixon appointed on LJMU nursing school

Liverpool John Moores University has picked Willmott Dixon to deliver a £20m overhaul of its Tithebarn Building, home to the School of Nursing and Allied Health, and the Avril Robarts Library.

Enabling works on the city-centre building are now under way, with Willmott Dixon set to kick off the project in earnest this May.

The existing Tithebarn Building will be extended and refurbished to include specialist practice simulation suites; refurbished teaching rooms; and improved study and social spaces within the Avril Robarts Library.

The overhaul of the Tithebarn Building is due to complete in March 2021, although the extension will be open for the start of the 2020/21 academic year. The refurbishment of the library will complete on a phased basis and is due to hand over in late 2020.

Sheppard Robson is the architect for the library while Day Architectural has designed the School of Nursing and Allied Health.

Heather Thrift, director of library services at LJMU, said: “The major enhancements to Avril Robarts Library are part of our wider programme of improvements to our library service.

“The works will deliver a great environment for our online and digital resources, book stock and dedicated study spaces for groups and individuals. We will also have more visible spaces for key student support teams, including careers and student advice and wellbeing.”

Anthony Dillon, managing director for Willmott Dixon in the North added: “This further builds on our recent track-record in the north that includes delivering the Schuster annex for University of Manchester. We have delivered over £100m of work in Liverpool in recent years and our local team are really looking forward to working with LJMU to deliver this next phase of their exciting growth and, in the process, sustain regional companies and jobs with our ‘local pound’ commitment.”
