Whitworth shortlist designs on display

The five architects shortlisted for the competition to design a new extension and remodelling of the Whitworth Art Gallery for the University of Manchester on Oxford Road have their designs on public display at the gallery throughout October.

The five shortlisted practices are:

  • Amanda Levete Architects
  • Edward Cullinan Architects
  • Haworth Tompkins
  • MUMA
  • Stanton Williams

One of the five shortlisted practices will be chosen to work with the Whitworth Art Gallery on the design of a new second entrance and extension for the gallery, connecting it directly into Whitworth Park at the southern gateway to the university campus.

Each practice will be invited back to give a presentation about its ideas and design to the panel of judges, chaired by University of Manchester chancellor Tom Bloxham, before the final decision is made. The winning design will form part of the gallery's stage two Heritage Lottery Fund bid which will be submitted in autumn 2010.

The final judging of the competition takes place in early November this year.
