Whitehaven Academy vision revealed

The 900-place school, featuring 72,000 sq ft of education and amenity space, is set to open in 2021 with Wates attached as main contractor.

A planning application for the school is due to head to Copeland Council for determination by the end of the year, allowing work to begin. Wates is scheduled to complete the build in 2021.

Facilities at the school will include 21 classrooms, seven science labs, two art studios, and three design and technology rooms. There will also be facilities including a sports hall along with drama and performance spaces.

Cumbria Education Trust took over the academy on Cleator Moor Road last year, and the new school will allow it to up pupil numbers to 900 from its current 540. The Trust currently operates eight schools with 4,000 pupils across Cumbria.

During the build, the existing school will remain in use in a bid to minimise disruption. Wates is set to complete the scheme in time for the 2021/2022 academic year.

The project has been funded by the Department for Education.

Academy headteacher Nigel Youngman said: “This is such an exciting time for the academy and a huge opportunity to really show how we want to improve the teaching and learning environment for all our students.

“As well as new facilities it’s a great benefit that we’ll have year and subject groups in clusters and so build on our strong sense of community. We are really looking forward to having a building that will help us maximise learning time and encourage our students to be successful.”
