Weak tender market triggers flood of GMC fit-out bidders

Fierce competition for construction tenders has led to around 100 contractors completing the pre-qualification questionnaire for the General Medical Council's fit-out of its new Spinningfields office in Manchester.

The first round of the tender process closes on 2 April and the 50,000 sq ft office is due to be ready for occupation by the end of 2009.

The GMC is relocating from Bruntwood's St James's Buildings on Oxford Road to Allied London's 3 Hardman Street as a result of expansion.

A maximum of eight from the 100 bidders will be asked to submit detailed tender documents. One contractor said the healthier market of two years ago would have produced a dozen PQQs by comparison.
