Warrington to improve street lighting

Warrington is to benefit from £45.5m of Government funding towards installing improved street lighting.

The funding was announced by Transport Minister Sadiq Khan, who said a total of £620m of Private Finance Initiative funding will be spent to enable seven local authorities in England to upgrade existing street lighting.

The Government said better street lighting will help to improve road safety in these areas as well as helping to reduce crime.

The local authorities are now being asked to prepare an outline business case for a PFI street lighting scheme. Once this is approved by the department and the inter-departmental project review group, the local authorities will start a procurement process.

The project review group oversees the approval process and has the task of endorsing all local authority PFI projects that will then receive revenue support, before they go into procurement through publishing a notice in the Official Journal of the European Communities.

The other successful authorities included Durham, Stockton, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, and Kirklees.
