Warden wins five-star hotel job in Blackpool

Lancashire firm Warden Construction has been awarded the contract to build Blackpool’s first five-star hotel by developer Coolsilk Property & Investment.

The hotel, which will be called the Sands Venue Resort Hotel, will have a gross development value of £18m. Designed by the Frank Whittle Partnership, it will feature 96 bedrooms and replaces the former Palatine Hotel.

Features of the design include large penthouse suites on the corner aspects.

Coolsilk’s directors are Peter and Karin Swann, respectively the chairman of Scunthorpe United FC and a former director of discount retailer Wilko. They said: “Our new hotel and leisure facility is a real confidence-booster for Blackpool and we want to make sure our investment benefits local people and the local economy as much as possible.

“We believe Blackpool is a resort that is on the up following the hard work of the council and other stakeholders in securing funding for new infrastructure and public realm improvements to the town. This has created the right conditions for attracting private sector investment.

“Our hotel will add value to the ongoing investment in the Blackpool visitor economy and complement the regeneration of the Winter Gardens and other facilities.”

Planning consent was secured earlier this year, and the veture is aiming for a summer 2019 opening.

David Robinson, managing partner of FWP, said: “We are delivering a conservation area sensitive scheme on one of the Promenade’s most popular sites.

“The new Sands Venue Resort Hotel will be a valuable addition to Blackpool and will have a real commercial, economic and architectural benefit to the town and surrounding areas.”

Warden and FWP have previously worked together on the delivery of upcoming non-league football club AFC Fylde’s stadium and leisure park in Kirkham.
