Views sought on new UCLan square
University of Central Lancashire has released a new image of its proposed £60m square and student centre in Preston, to encourage the public to attend forthcoming consultations on the plans.
Called the New Square, the project includes a remodelled Adelphi roundabout and the construction of a public space, drawing together the university and the city.
The space will be used by local businesses and residents, as well as hosting a variety of cultural events once it is built.
The student centre on the edge of the square has been designed by Hawkins\Brown, and will be the flagship project in UCLan’s £200m 10-year campus masterplan.
The design concept features a biodiverse roof, LED lighting, a pavilion café bar and “a large glass façade to create feelings of light, space and airiness”.
UCLan has released the image ahead of a series of planned public consultation events set to take place between 10 June and 22 June. The university is also carrying out a market research exercise with industry professionals, advertised though OJEU.
Vision for new student centre
Michael Ahern, chief operating officer at UCLan, said: “A key consideration throughout all stages of the masterplan has been to ensure the city and the region benefit from the opportunities the project will create.
“We’re listening to and working with our neighbours and the wider community, and have already held a number of successful events with various user groups.
“Consultations are an excellent way for members of the public to speak to the team behind the project, ask questions and give feedback which will help to shape the scheme.”
The public consultation events are as follows:
- Saturday 10 June, 10am – 4.30pm at Plungington Community Centre
- Tuesday 13 June, 3.30pm – 5.30pm, English Martyrs Catholic Primary School
- Thursday 15 June, 11am – 1pm, UCLan Students’ Union
- Tuesday 20 June, 3pm – 8pm, InTheCity Shop, St George’s Shopping Centre
- Thursday 22 June, 5pm – 7pm at Plungington Community Centre
