The co-founders of Manchester beer cellar Albert’s Schloss want to open a 20,000 sq ft café, bar and performance space on land being redeveloped by a Capital & Centric and Kamani Property Group joint venture.
Licence and planning applications have been submitted to Manchester city centre for the founders of Albert’s Schloss on Peter Street to open the Swan Street Firehouse bar, cafe, restaurant and events space in two existing units at the Northern Quarter development site.
The site off Swan Street is opposite Mackie Mayor food hall and houses two derelict buildings, a former MOT garage and a storage facility.
The derelict units are 3,500 sq ft and 2,500 sq ft respectively and the Swan Street Firehouse would also occupy the outside space totalling a further 14,000 sq ft on a temporary basis, under the plans, while Capital & Centric and Kamani Property complete the design and planning process for their scheme.
The developers signed the 50:50 JV in January after purchasing the land from Swan Street Developments for an undisclosed sum.
Kamani Property’s chief executive Adam Kamani said at the time that the JV hoped to build “either a 115-apartment block or a 200-bed hotel” on the site, but a variety of uses were being explored at the time.
Architect Hawkins\Brown is in the process of drawing up designs, and a planning application was expected to be submitted later in the year.
Tim Heatley, co-founder of Manchester-based Capital & Centric, told Place North West: “It was always our intention to do something interesting with [the site] while we went through the design development process but when Covid-19 kicked in, it was essential we used our relationships to set up a Covid-19 emergency supply depot there, staffed entirely by volunteers from our supply chain.
“Those volunteers, like the rest of us, have had to get back to the day jobs as the construction industry is almost back up to full speed. The emergency depot has served its purpose, so now it’s time to go back our original intentions.”
