Two North West buildings on Stirling shortlist

The rebuilt Everyman Theatre and the new home of Manchester School of Art have been named on the shortlist for the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize.

The two buildings will compete with the Library of Birmingham, London Aquatics Centre, London School of Economics Saw Swee Hock Student Centre and The Shard for the architectural accolade.

The £13.3m Everyman Theatre in Liverpool was designed by Haworth Tompkins for Liverpool & Merseyside Theatres Trust.

The £23.6m Manchester School of Art was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios for Manchester Metropolitan University.

More than 50 buildings in the UK and Europe received RIBA National Awards in June and formed the long list from which the six finalists were selected.

The Stirling jury will visit the schemes in the autumn and the winner will be announced on 16 October.

The contractor at Everyman Theatre was Gilbert-Ash, while CharcoalBlue provided theatre consultancy, Alan Baxter & Associates was structural engineer, and Watermans Building Services was servicer engineer.

The contractor at the Manchester School of Art was Morgan Sindall, with Arup as structural engineer and Turner & Townsend providing M&E consultancy.
