Two dead at Crewe building site

Two men have died after a crane collapsed at a Seddon building site for a care home in Dunwoody Way, Crewe.

The site is a new build scheme next to the Morrison’s store. The crane collapsed yesterday afternoon during erection of the tower crane, trapping three people. One man was taken to Royal Stoke Hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

Next of kin have been informed, but formal identification has yet to take place. Chief superintendent Matt Welsted of Cheshire Police said: “This is a truly tragic incident, and our deepest condolences go out to the families affected at this extremely difficult time.

“This is a multi-agency operation and we are working closely with the Health & Safety Executive, local authority, and building control to establish the full circumstances of the incident, however I would like to reassure members of the public that nobody else is at risk.”

In a statement, Seddon chief executive Jonathan Seddon said: “On behalf of everyone at Seddon I’d like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of those who so tragically lost their lives yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved, and words cannot express how we feel.

“At this time I cannot speculate as to the cause of this incident, but needless to say there will be a full investigation and Seddon is working closely with the emergency services and Health and Safety Executive. We will provide further updates once more information becomes available.”
