Turleys advises Edge Hill on new sports centre

Planning consultancy Turley Associates has submitted a planning application on behalf of Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, west Lancashire for a £30m sports complex.

The application, submitted to West Lancashire Council, seeks permission to improve infrastructure and car parking alongside a new sports and recreation centre to serve the university and wider community on land to the east of the present campus.

There will be an indoor sports hall with eight courts and a 25m swimming pool in a new building, surrounded by a range of floodlit natural and synthetic playing pitches, games courts and an athletics track.

Steve Igoe, pro vice-chancellor of resources at Edge Hill University, said: "This investment in the Ormskirk campus will ensure the university continues to enhance and develop all aspects of the student experience, particularly the quality of the campus, and ensure that the university will continue to be a leading 'university of choice' for students and employees alike in what is likely to be an increasingly competitive higher education market. The project will also maintain and further the university's reputation as a leading provider of sport and physical activity related degree programmes."

West Lancashire Borough Council is expected to deliver its decision in early autumn. Construction is hoped to begin in 2012 and be completed by 2013.
