Triton wins £1.6m Wigan contract

The construction firm has been appointed to build a £4m facility in Wigan for self-storage provider SureStore, in what is expected to be the first of several collaborations between the companies. 

The contract, understood to be worth around £1.6m, includes the design and construction of a 50,000 sq ft four-storey building on a vacant site on Pitt Street in the town centre, formerly occupied by furniture maker Latham Jenkins. The existing building is to be demolished as part of the scheme. 

Planning approval for the development was granted in January and Triton is scheduled to start work in April. 

The Wigan facility will become SureStore’s seventh location. The firm has three existing facilities across the North West and Midlands in Bolton, Northwich and Bury, as well as three further pipeline projects in the North. 

SureStore plans to expand further and aims to operate 20 stores nationwide within the next 18 months, with Triton lined up to deliver a number of those projects.  

Mike Wilson, managing director at SureStore, said: “We were already familiar with Triton due to its good working relationship with our architect C4 Projects, and are aware of its good credentials in constructing striking buildings for operators in the self-storage industry.   

“Triton has shown great flexibility, allowing us to have early access for fit-out during the build programme, and thus speeding up the process for us to become operational. We hope to be able to work with Triton on more of our pipeline projects.” 

Paul Clarkson, managing director at Triton Construction, said: “Our credentials in building storage and warehouse facilities that stand out from the ordinary are strong and we are hoping to secure more projects with SureStore, with three further projects pending in the North.” 

Triton is currently undertaking refurbishment work at the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool.
