Triton starts on 92,000 sq ft Castlefield storage facility

Work has started on self-storage company Big Yellow’s £12m 92,000 sq ft building in Castlefield, next to the recently-opened Ordsall Chord railway line.

The five-storey building sits on Water Street on a site that has been owned by Big Yellow for around 12 years. The company said work had initially been delayed by compulsory purchase orders by Network Rail in 2012, and added it had been in “lengthy negotiations” with Manchester City Council before work started.

Groundworks on the site began in January and have now completed, allowing Triton to begin erecting steelwork in the coming weeks.

Alongside Triton, the professional team includes Qoud as planner and architect Mountford Pigott. Plans were approved for the project in September last year.

Michael Parkinson, Triton Construction managing director, said: “Whilst this should be a relatively straightforward five storey build we are having to take extra care and adjust our methods to adhere to the strict vibration monitoring that is being undertaken by Network Rail. We’re doing everything we can to ensure that there is limited ground movement, avoiding disturbance to the lines.”

Nigel Hartley, construction director of Big Yellow added: “We had a requirement from the local authority to ensure that we built an exemplar building with high quality public realm, and that the construction and finish was sensitive to the surroundings.

“To do so we needed a company with the experience and technical expertise to deliver despite the complexities, and Triton seem to be thriving on the challenge.”
