Trio to start Kings School homes in September
Housebuilders Barratt and David Wilson Homes, with housing association Torus, are to deliver a recently approved scheme to redevelop part of the school’s estate on Fence Avenue in Macclesfield, ahead of its move to a £60m campus in Prestbury.
Cheshire East Council granted outline consent for the Fence Avenue site, comprising 300 homes, in 2017. Full approval for the scheme was awarded this week.
The development will include 90 affordable homes, under the plans. The remaining 210 will be available for open market sale.
The former school building, previously Macclesfield High School for Girls, will be converted into apartments. A total of eight properties will have one bedroom, 76 will have two bedrooms, 108 will have three, 101 will have four, and seven will have five bedrooms.
Manchester-based IDP is the architect for the project.
Government agency Homes England, which bought the site in 2018, named the three parties selected to bring the project forward this week and said that work would commence in September when King’s School takes up residence at the new-build Prestbury campus.
As well as a new school, a full suite of sports facilities will be available for community use. These include a nine-lane 25-metre swimming pool; indoor cricket centre; pitches for hockey, football, rugby and cricket, and nine-court sports hall.
The school’s relocation to Prestbury will trigger the start of several other projects to redevelop its sprawling estate.
Housebuilders McCarthy & Stone, Hillcrest Homes and Bellway are each advancing projects within the high-profile Cumberland Street site on the western approach to the town centre.
