Torus scoops approval for St Helens ‘move on’ homes

The housebuilder has been granted planning permission to build 12 homes at Egerton Street in Sutton, aimed at people with particular needs or who have been homeless and wish to live independently.

The £1.6m scheme in St Helens is supported by Homes England as part of the Government’s Move On fund. It will aim to provide permanent homes for individuals looking to find more stable and long-term accommodation.

Under the plans, Torus will develop four one-bedroom bungalows and eight one-bedroom flats in partnership with modular housing provider Osco Homes. The two companies have already worked together to deliver Pennine Close in St Helens.

Osco also works with first-time offenders from HMP Hindley in Wigan to help them learn new skills and find employment following their release.

Work is due to start on site at Egerton Street this month.

Steve Alcock, director of developments and sales at Torus, said: “This is an important development for Torus and one that showcases our dedication not only to our communities, but also to using modern, more efficient and sustainable construction techniques with key partners.”

And Cllr Jeanie Bell, St Helens Council’s cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, added: “Safe and suitable move-on accommodation is an essential piece of the puzzle, and can provide the stability many people need to turn the corner from rough sleeping, homelessness and refuge spaces, to securing long-term independence.”

The Egerton Street scheme is part of Torus’ £22m investment in expanding the housing offer in St Helens. It is also building Foundry Wharf, a 130-home independent living complex in the town, refurbishing three blocks of flats at Appleton Road, and delivering several homes for over-55s at Crab Street.

“We are committed to increasing access to much-needed supported living accommodation and building homes that fit the needs of the people who live in St Helens,” Alcock said.
