Three North West towns share £7m to boost cycling routes

Blackpool, Chester and Southport have been awarded a combined £7m by the Government as Cycling Demonstration Towns, Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly announced today.

Over the next three years the department for transport will invest:
£2.84m in Blackpool
£2.4m in Chester
£1.8m in Southport

In Chester new cycling routes will be designated aimed at doubling the number of cycling trips from 4% to 8%. Southport aims for an average of 15% of high school pupils cycling to school.

Local partners will match the department's contribution to create record levels of investment in cycling and help make it a more viable travel option.
