THING OF THE WEEK

GARDEN PARTY… XLB’s Tootal Buildings in Manchester has a snazzy new outdoor courtyard, thanks to contractor TMT, which completed the project in 20 weeks. As the building is the headquarters of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, it was fitting that GM Mayor Andy Burnham was the one to declare the new garden open. Thankfully his contribution ended with cutting the ribbon and he didn’t have a chance to jump on the decks for an impromptu DJ set.

Greg Dickson will ride his bike whatever the weather.

HEATWAVE… It was hot this week. Some said it was like an oven, some said it was like a sauna, but whatever very warm thing you chose to compare the heat to, we can all agree it was gross. Despite the country doing its best impression of the inside of an active volcano, one property professional simply could not resist the temptation to test out one particular hypothesis: at what temperature will a planning consultant melt? Greg Dickson, partner at Barton Willmore, now Stantec, chose to cycle to Manchester from Stockport and back on the hottest day in the history of humanity. Brave? Or something else?

COMMON GOAL… Anyone up for a kickabout? JLL is hosting a 5-a-side football tournament in September that aims to celebrate the achievements of the Lionesses’ at the women’s Euros and promote the importance of equality within the property industry. JLL is inviting the UK’s property scene to mobilise and sign up for the competition, which is open to absolutely everyone. It costs £350 per team to enter and cash raised will be donated to Hideout Youth Zone, an East Manchester-based youth club that seeks to provide a space for young people to spend their leisure time. If you’re interested in getting involved you can find out more here.

CAN YA DIG IT… If football isn’t your thing, maybe a leisurely historical treasure hunt is more up your street. Peel L&P and Salford University are hosting a 10-day archaeological dig at the Hulton Estate in Bolton from Monday, where you could be in with a chance of unearthing some precious artefacts. The dig will take place on the site of the former Hulton Hall. It was demolished in 1958 and the cellars and foundations are not thought to have been explored since. First one to find Sir William Rothwell Hulton’s wine collection wins.

CORE BLIMEY… The 16th North West Regional Construction Awards took place last night at the Hilton hotel in Manchester. The big winners included Morgan Sindall Construction, which scooped contractor of the year, and Energy House 2.0, which was awarded the best project gong. The event also presented the opportunity to view Manchester’s skyline from a great height. There can’t be many better vantage points than the 23rd floor of the Hilton to get a glimpse of Salboy’s emerging Viadux scheme. Keep your eyes peeled for a full list of the winners at the NWRCA on Place North West soon.

The Tootal building always was a lovely old building, one of many around there and now made even better.
