SEEDED POSITION… There’ve been some imaginative responses to the general election. A favourite was seed snack company Super Seed commissioning a ‘food artist’ to make portraits of the Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem leaders out of edible ingredients. The portraits are made up of more than 1,000,000 seeds ranging from sunflower for Jeremy Corbyn’s beard, hemp for Theresa May’s hair, and linseed for Tim Farron’s smile. After steering his party to an unexpectedly strong showing in the election, it looks like Corbyn will have to wait before he finds time to plant himself in his allotment.
CAKE BAKE… Tomorrow will see some of the UK’s most reputable architectural practices put their creativity to the test in a battle to win over a selective judging panel. But it’s not the latest competition to design the country’s newest skyscraper, it’s something much more tasty. As part of the London Festival of Architecture, Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Allies & Morrison and Hawkins\Brown are battling it out in The Great Architectural Bake Off, creating gastronomic-architectural delights. BOOZE NEWS… Echo Arena Liverpool has signed a naming rights and supply deal with Halewood Wines & Spirits for its new VIP lounge. The bar will be known as The Liverpool Collection Lounge after the venue signed a three-year deal with the craft distiller, and will sell a range of drinks from Halewood’s premium quality spirits portfolio including Liverpool Gin and Liverpool Vodka. Wonder if the bar will also stock some of Halewood’s more popular, but perhaps less classy, brands of booze, such as Lambrini.
SPORTING FACT… The latest campaign from Historic England is keen to make sure that local places which have made global history get their due. People may already know that Manchester witnessed the first splitting of the atom, but 77% of those surveyed in the North West didn’t know that the first trainers were produced in the back streets of Bolton. In 1895, Joe Foster invented the running spike above his father’s sweet shop, and this is widely believed to have been the creation of the world’s favourite leisure footwear. His company, JW Foster’s, ended up supplying shoes to Olympian runners.
DUDE DANCING… Images of dancing policemen captured the hearts of the people at Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester concert last Sunday, organised in defiance of terrorism and in memory of the 22 people who died in the Arena attack. Among the bobbies getting down to the beat was none other than construction manager Mike Walmsley. When he’s not being a special constable on evenings and weekends, he works at Willmott Dixon, currently delivering an £8.5m school for Liverpool City Council. And…
