THING OF THE WEEK

CELEB SPOTTING… If you enjoy celebrity spotting then there are few better places to grab a coffee than Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter. The area, which houses the newly grade one-listed Philharmonic pub and sits between the city’s two cathedrals, is star-studded, according to Domec’s Matt Fedigan. He has shared a beer with Brian May, seen Nick Cave strolling down Falkner Street and, on more than one occasion, spied Jurgen Klopp looking wistfully out of a hotel window. Just as a sceptical THING was listening to these encounters being retold in a cafe on Hope Street, who should walk through the door than weather-beaten actor Stephen Mangan.

Laporte Thing

‘I look down on you…’

LA-PAD… After a tumultuous week for Manchester City fans there is some good news to report as star defender Aymeric Laporte has put pen to paper on a deal to take the penthouse in the 28-storey Axis Tower at Deansgate Locks.

Apparently he took Sergio Aguero round to have a look and the Argentinian, who bought the £4m penthouse at the 44-storey West Tower at Deansgate Square, couldn’t resist a chuckle over the fact that he would be able to look down on his teammate from the comfort of his own pad. For the diminutive Aguero it must be nice to have the height advantage for a change.

Manchester Science Festival

SIM ONLY… Manchester Science Festival returns to the Science & Industry Museum for 2020 after taking a break last year. The festival will run from 23 October to 1 November and focus on the theme of climate change. This year, you will be able to explore how cities, the natural world, and humans respond to global warming. The popular festival will now take place every two years, the museum said, to ensure the “most innovative, playful and meaningful experiences possible”.

Pownall Street Bricklad

POCKET WARMER…While the current stormy weather does not make sitting around outside seem that attractive, a pocket park during the summer sounds just the ticket. An application from developer Brickland could be the answer, as it plans to create a pocket park in Pownall Square off Tithebarn Street in Liverpool. Fingers crossed the weather improves by the time this application goes through.

Slingers Mural Graffiti

ART ATTACK… Graffiti artist Shawn Sharpe of Good Good Graffiti has produced a piece for Slingers Ironmongers in Preston to show off its local heritage. The 8m by 2.5m mural can be seen on its building in Ribble Saw Mill on Paley Road. The company was formed by Richard Slinger in 1858 and is now in its sixth generation. Peter Slinger said: “We wanted to showcase our history and our involvement in the development of the city in a contemporary way that our customers could relate to. Along with illustrations taken from family pictures we wanted to include iconic images of the city, such as Tom Finney’s famous splash photo, the Harris Library, the Preston lamb and even the bollard that keeps being knocked down in Fishergate for people to try and spot.”
