Therme reveals plans for Trafford wellbeing resort

Plans have emerged for a 28-acre “wellbeing resort” on the site of EventCity in Trafford, operated by leisure development giant Therme Group.

Therme builds and operates facilities across the world, including Therme Bucharest, the largest thermal leisure resort in Europe.

A site on Barton Dock Road, between Phoenix Way, Mercury Way and the Bridgewater Canal, is currently home to EventCity, which is set to relocate into the building occupied by Soccerdome. An eight pitch outdoor football facility is also to be built next door.

The news was revealed as part of a leaflet drop to shops and residents around the Trafford Centre.

The scheme is being proposed in partnership with Peel Group, which owns and operates EventCity.

Therme

A consultation event is set to take place next week at EventCity, from 2pm-8pm on Thursday 25 July, and from midday to 4pm on Friday 26 July.

According to the leaflet: “Therme Manchester will bring together the tradition of the ancient Roman spa with an indoor tropical paradise. Therme resorts are some of the largest attractions in the world, built and operating at the highest level of quality and sustainability. The concept has been running in Europe for over 20 years, making a long-lasting positive impact on communities.

“Nature and water are at the heart of Therme creating a true oasis in the city, with everything from exciting wave pools and waterslides to relaxing luxury spa experiences.”

WSP | Indigo is the planner advising on the project.

Never mind this. The question when Peel submit a proposal and visual should be, what is heir REAL intention, long term?

“Port” Salford = publicly funded infrastructure improvement and consent for warehousing.

Is this really just a Trojan horse for changing land use for housing development?

Not sure. How can this symbol of a maturing leisure offer possibly compete with whatever tacky, string-vest, log flume affair Anderson city council has talked about imposing on Otterspool??

By Mike

Clearly (if this is actually real ) the planners have not left their tax havens long enough to discover that the entire site absolutely reeks of poo 10 months out of the year given the close proximity of the huge sewage works. Not ideal for a health spa.

At what point do they think junctions 9 and 10 of the M60 can’t actually cope with any more destinations off them? Traffic is bad enough as it is!

By Pollution Overload

It something that is known as air condition Onion, usually found inside buildings

Good to see European businesses willing to invest in the UK and in the NW given the current brexit position?

Looks absolutely hideous. Should fit right in there.

This is great news for not just Manchester but the North West generally. A huge employment generator and a leisure offering that we will all benefit from. I’ve just looked at the website – it looks brilliant!

Always good seeing foreign investment into GM. When is it meant to be up and running?

By Gavin

Dang. I thought it was going to be Piccadilly Gardens’ next incarnation..

Is it me, or is this a bit weird!

By Rich X

Great news, people will come from all over for this

By Lloyd

Good to see Manchester tourist offering going from strength to strength with this RHS Bridgewater, the Factory all on the way,

By J Murph

It will be like a posh Rhyl sun centre, hopefully without any floaters

This looks pretty cool

Cannot bare tacky Trafford centre Blackpool on a shopping scale , I will stick to travelling and doing my shopping in Liverpool

By Karen

Thanks for that Karen, now we know, a lot of people from Liverpool disagree with you, luckily for the Trafforc Centre as much of their business comes from down that way

By Dan

Karen I too can’t bare the Trafford centre but Liverpool 1 is no better, what promised much has turned out to be a major disappointment with a poor retail offer and dull architecture.

By Lenny1968

@LENNY yeh right! Liverpool One is beautiful with plenty to offer with a park looking over The Royal Albert Dock its clean refreshing and vibrant that fits in with todays modern living , and outdoing anywhere else in the North of England , so I guess you are wrong and tell that to the millions that shop there and the coach loads of visitors daily that come from all over including Manchester

By Karen

The Trafford Centre is like Blackpool? Please point out where the branch of John Lewis and Selfridges are Karen? I must have missed them in amongst the pound shops.

By Elephant

I personally think this is absolutely awesome news, provided they can sort out the increased congestion this will cause. Anyone who’s been to the one in Bucharest will know how awesome these places are. This will be a major draw for the area and the whole of the north.

…anyway, back to the positive news of foreign investment into new leisure facilities in Manchester. Adding to what is an already amazing leisure offer in this area.

Therme Manchester will bring together the tradition of the ancient Roman spa with an indoor tropical paradise.
Sounds appalling.

Karen you are embarrassing yourself and other Liverpudlians

By Floyd

I am actually from Wigan

By Karem

Liverpool 1 is alright.

We could do with a wellness spa overlooking the docks anyway!

“Place North West: For property and regeneration professionals”
Are you sure? Judging by some of the mud slinging around these pages…

What leaflet drop. I live within walking distance & I haven’t had a leaflet. The place is already gridlocked don’t need anymore traffic especially as we get told it will not affect local people. It bloody does. Can’t even get onto the motorway at Eccles some days to go anywhere with the queuing traffic to get to stuff round there.

By Resty

Will this be £200 for a family of four for a day out or even more.

By Steve

I am a local resident and I didn’t receive a leaflet! I’m not sure how this will ‘ have a long lasting positive impact on communities’? The traffic round there is already horrendous and another ‘attraction ‘ is only going to make things worse. I have to drive past to work 5 days a week and it’s already hateful!! There should be discounts for residents in the vicinity then maybe a bit of well being will be restored.

By Michelle

A lot of negativity about this project. Think yourselves lucky as it could have been a Roman arena where you’d all be fed to the lions for moaning. As for me, I like the idea and will be getting a toga and sandals as soon as it opens.
