The Mere finishes hotel expansion

The £15m new hotel extension at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa near Knutsford, Cheshire opened at the weekend.

The phased project involved delivery of 81 hotel bedrooms, a new health spa which opened in February 2011 and refurbishment of the country club bar and restaurant.

The project team included interior design consultancy Mather & Co, architects NJSR, and construction contractor Pochin. The project was funded by Royal Bank of Scotland.

The health club and spa, which was the first phase to open last February, is set in its own dedicated building occupying the old stable block and courtyard. Here, Mather & Co's interior design included a new reception area with dramatic illuminated glass backdrop, a bar and restaurant, 20m swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam rooms and seven bespoke treatment rooms.

Chris Mather said: "We were excited to be working on what is a world-class destination resort right here on our doorstep in Cheshire. As a business we may be better known for our experience in the museum, visitor attraction and sports sectors but this is currently one of the UK's most prestigious redevelopments and it has served to remind of our design skills and project management pedigree in the hotel and leisure industry."
