Talbot Gateway grant bid clears regional hurdle

The NWDA has approved significant grant funding for Muse Developments' Talbot Gateway scheme in Blackpool.

Muse was appointed preferred developer on the 35-acre project in April 2007 and submitted planning applications in December 2009. Muse plans to deliver 850,000 sq ft of offices alongside a supermarket, hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants around Blackpool North Station and Talbot Road. The scheme will be anchored by new 85,000 sq ft headquarters offices for Blackpool Council.

The level of grant funding has not been disclosed but is believed to be in excess of £20m. The NWDA said the development was important to Blackpool and it was encouraged by the inclusion of Blackpool Council's own assets and the significant private investment by Muse.

The funding is now subject to approval by the Treasury.

The project will be delivered in phases and the NWDA will review each phase to ensure value for money. The agency and Muse have agreed an employment policy that ensures local people will benefit from the construction phases as much as possible.

Muse hopes to start on site in 2011 subject to planning. Phase one will consist of the food superstore and council offices together with new public realm and infrastructure works.
