Summer start on Wigan Enterprise Park overhaul

Barratt Homes has bought the 27-acre former Wigan Enterprise Park from St Modwen and is due to start on site this summer on 325 homes, a development approved on appeal in 2016.

Wigan Enterprise Park in Ince-in-Makerfield has been vacant for a number of years.

Wigan Council rejected St Modwen’s proposals for the homes in 2015, and the decision was overturned by a planning inspector in 2016. However the scheme has still taken four years to secure approval for the detailed application.

Built on the site of a former colliery and forge, the project will see a mixture of two, three and four-bedroom homes brought forward. Barratt Homes is set to carry out extensive remediation work on the land.

The development will also see the reopening of a stretch of the Ince Brook which is currently culvert.

Nick Whittingham, development director at St Modwen, said: “After a lengthy planning process, it’s fantastic that we’ll now be able to see this former industrial site transformed into a biodiverse environment that will be home to a new local community. This sale is a prime example of St. Modwen’s commitment to bringing forward new homes by providing quality residential land to third-party housebuilders.”

Barratt Homes secured reserved matters consent in January.
