Stockport brings four town centre sites to market

Stockport Council has put four sites in the town centre on Lower Hillgate, Underbank, and Churchgate up for sale with the potential for residential, commercial, or mixed-use development.

The council owns all four sites and these are available on a long leasehold basis. The sites are 29-35 Little Underbank; 1-3 Lower Hillgate; 6-16 Lower Hillgate; and a plot of land on Churchgate.

Some of the sites, including 1-3 Lower Hillgate, were subject to a compulsory purchase order by Stockport Council last year. Most are primarily occupied by retail and sit in the town centre’s historic core.

The Underbank area is undergoing significant change as part of the council’s town centre strategy, with the Winter’s pub another property set for redevelopment after closing down in January this year. Winter’s is set to be replaced with a new restaurant.

On nearby Lower Hillgate, planning applications including a five-and-six-storey apartment block have already come forward this year.

Roger Hannah & Co has been appointed to market the sites for sale and offers are to be submitted no later than 28 September 2018.

The sites are the latest to be put up for sale by the council, after the site of the former Ritz Cinema, now a surface car park, was marketed in July this year.

Cllr Kate Butler, Stockport Council’s cabinet member for economy and regeneration said: “Developing these sites in the heart of our town is central to our vision for Stockport to become a leading town centre location.

“This ambition complements developments already taking place on our new commercial quarter at Stockport Exchange, the town’s rapidly emerging leisure offer, and innovative plans that are enhancing our already excellent connectivity even further. The council is leading this investment with its partners and these sites provide a fantastic opportunity for developers and investors to be a part of Stockport’s bright future.”
