St Modwen reaches final phase of £100m Vulcan Works

The developer has won planning approval from St Helens Council for 90 homes as part its Vulcan Works development in Newton-le-Willows on the site of the former locomotive manufacturer which closed in 1962.

An outline planning application for the wider 630-home project was submitted in 2003 and approved by the Secretary of State on appeal in 2007.

The final phase is made up of 90 homes, a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom houses, to be built on a 5.5-acre site to the east of Wargrave Road.

The architect is RPS and Lambert Smith Hampton is planning consultant.

To the south of the site, phase three of Vulcan Works is under construction with 134 homes in the pipeline.

Phase two of the scheme saw the construction of an 18,000 sq ft Aldi supermarket, following the demolition of the demolition of the old sports facilities.

Aldi signed a 20-year lease on the store in 2015.
