St Helens rejects 1,000-home Eccleston Village

After a near three-hour discussion, the planning committee voted to refuse Mulbury’s plans in line with officer recommendations.

Prior to rejecting the plans, the committee voted on a motion to defer the application so that the developer could provide more information on certain issues.

However, the motion was not backed and the golf course will remain undeveloped four years after it closed.

The housebuilder’s plans for almost 1,000 homes on the former Eccleston Park Golf Club have proved controversial.

Officers claimed the 123-acre scheme would harm the Green Belt and were not happy with the level of detail Mulbury provided on affordable housing, education contributions, and biodiversity mitigation.

Mulbury was seeking planning approval for a hybrid application that could eventually see almost 1,000 homes built on the former golf course, as well as an 11,500 sq ft health centre, 4,000 sq ft retail store, and a 7,000 sq ft nursery.

Mulbury consulted on a masterplan for Eccleston Park Village in May 2020.
