Southport pier refurbishment underway

A £2m revamp of Southport pier has begun, with Bolton based-contractor Taziker working on the grade-two listed structure.

An extension to the pavilion of over 1,000 sq ft will enable the construction of two retail kiosks, both 430 sq ft in size, on either side of the pavilion entrance.

Two seating shelters on the pier front will be demolished, instead making way for further kiosks, and two staircases will be built linking the pier deck to the beach. Added internal floor space of 1,750 sq ft to the current 4,300 sq ft will include a food and drink kiosk of 500 sq ft and three 140 sq ft retail kiosks.

The £2m grant was awarded by the Coastal Community Fund as part of the Southport development framework, a scheme aiming to help the seaside town see economic growth through various ventures. The remaining £900,000 was allocated from Sefton council’s contingency fund.

Michael Taziker, director of Taziker, said: “As the pier is a vital element of Southport’s tourism industry, public access will be maintained during the works. Our intention is to minimise the impact of our works, ensuring the continued use of the pier during these works and for many years to come.”

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Labour cabinet member for regeneration and skills, said: “The pier project is an important element of the Southport development framework, which was key in attracting this funding. Along with Sefton’s own investment, it clearly shows that Sefton is open for business as we continue to value and support the growth of the visitor economy.”

The overall project is due for completion in December 2018.
