Sony took 65,000 sq ft at the Echo Building in 2019

Sony confirmed for Liverpool’s Echo Place

Sony Interactive has agreed to lease 65,000 sq ft across three floors at Old Hall Street, relocating 500 staff from Wavertree Technology Park.

The deal was reported by Place North West in November last year, shortly after the news that Dubai investor Select Group had acquired the building from Reach, the publishing group formerly known as Trinity Mirror, in a forward-funding deal.

The refit of the former newspaper building is under way and is set to feature 60,000 sq ft of offices, a 207-bed hotel, and 26,000 sq ft of retail on the ground floor. The building was vacated by the Liverpool Echo, which moved 300 staff to a 25,000 sq ft space at 5 St Paul’s Square.

The hotel has been leased to Meliá Hotels International Group for its Innside brand, and is due to open in spring 2020.

A restaurant and bar is set to be built at street level, while a sky bar will be situated on the 17th floor.

Paradigm Property Consultants represented the Reach and Select joint venture as development manager and agent. Worthington Owen represented Sony.

Noting that Sony have maxed out the available space, logically there is no room for expansion. How long is the lease?

I’m surprised they’ve even taken this. What’s wrong with the studio they set up in Salford Quays, at the same time as they threw Runcorn on the scrapper in 2015?

Don’t tell me they can’t get the staff over there!??

This is great news for Old Hall Street – will hopefully animate this area of the City and add to the existing St Paul’s Square development. Fingers crossed this letting results in the arrival of a decent quality restaurant which the area is sadly lacking. Well done Sony.

Nice letting. Good to see major players such as Sony are prepared to consider a location like this. Will help transform this part of the City Centre. All positive. Well done!

Will the new bus service plans go there ?

Great news! If we can speed up the Waterfront links to the bridge across Princes Dock it will all join up nicely, doubling the size of the Commercial District helping us compete with the best. The Pier Head station mooted by the Council, (which is the opening of a new entrance to James Street underground) will also be transformational. Well done Sony; this is an exciting place to be!

Nice to see disparaging remarks left in place about Liverpool with those challenging them removed.
