Smith reveals fresh plans for East Manchester

Regeneration body New East Manchester is planning a renovation of the Central Retail Park on Great Ancoats Street and 'exciting proposals' for SportsCity as part of its long-term strategy, according to chief executive Eddie Smith.

Speaking at the launch of New East Manchester's 10-year strategy, Smith told delegates that plans will be at the centre of two "arcs of employment" the organisation wants to create.

He also revealed that he is in discussions with Hendersons, the owners of the retail park, over plans for the site, saying: "In its current state, it is not an appealing gateway site to the city.

"We want to reconnect the economy of East Manchester to the rest of the city."

Smith said that full plans for SportsCity would be revealed at the end of the summer, before adding that the newly created tram stops in East Manchester could also present some economic opportunities, with Newton Heath, Gorton and Openshaw in particular being given special attention.
