Six weeks to give views on GM 2040 transport plans

Transport for Greater Manchester is half-way through the 12-week consultation into its transport strategy to 2040, which it said has received more than 1,000 responses so far.

The consultation into the 2040 Greater Manchester Transport Strategy ends on Monday 26 September. The strategy outlines the long-term plan for all aspects of travel in the city region, from local neighbourhoods to the access of global markets via Manchester Airport.

It lists a series of priorities to be addressed in the city region over the next 25 years. These include a mix of projects which have already been committed to, as well as schemes listed as ‘ongoing’ within the strategy period, which will be subject to feasibility studies.

According to TfGM, comments received so far highlight the importance, in particular, of improving transport system integration, cycling, fares and ticketing and bus services.

60% of responses received are from residents in Manchester, Stockport, Salford and Trafford, with lower response rates in other district council areas. Male respondents outnumber female 3 to 1 and only 11% of responses to date come from those aged 25 and under.

Alongside the strategy, TfGM is also consulting on a five-year delivery plan which details the first stage of implementation.

Simon Warburton, TfGM’s strategy director, said: “It’s great to see such public interest in our 2040 Strategy so far and I hope to see that continue in coming weeks.

“We’re proposing an inclusive, sustainable and integrated transport network that helps people stay connected, regardless of where they live.

“The high levels of engagement reflect the important role transport plays in all of our lives. It is also clear that local residents and businesses support our ambition for further improvements to connectivity across our growing conurbation.”
