Shortlist revealed for graphene centre

Manchester University has confirmed the six contractors competing to build the £61m National Graphene Institute: they are Lend Lease, Laing O'Rourke, Bam, Morgan Sindall, Vinci, M&W Group.

The construction contract is believed to be worth £30m. The Booth Street East research institute will contain labs and collaborative commercial space for experts in the super-material to share findings and develop products. The architect for the 81,600 sq ft building is Jestico + Whiles.

The main contractor is expected to be named in April. Completion of the building is scheduled for early 2015.

Always good to see French, German and Dutch outfits on the bid list for a project at the leading edge of innovation.Word on the street is that UK builders Kier & Sir Robert McAlpine were both bumped off the original tender list after a challenge and a recount presumably originated from that well known local NW contractor M&W Group….based in Stuttgart!
