Ship Canal tours remain buoyant

Merseytravel reported another record year for its Manchester Ship Canal ferry tours, with 22,000 passengers carried this season.

The figure is more than double the 10,500 passengers carried in 2004. The six-hour, 35-mile cruise departs from Liverpool on Saturdays and Salford on Sundays between spring and autumn, and features a live commentary into the history of the industrial waterway.

The final Ship Canal Cruises of 2009 season will depart on Saturday 17 October from Liverpool and Sunday 18 October from Salford Quays.

Merseytravel said it has spent £60m refurbishing its Mersey Ferries in the past ten years. However, the transport authority confirmed earlier this year it was considering cutting the number of vessels in operation as part of a cost review.
