Salford City Council is looking to appoint a series of strategic partners in disciplines including development management, transport, and estate rationalisation as it looks to take advantage of the area’s rapidly-growing economy.
The council, which has in the last two years spent around £1m on external professional services, is holding early market engagement to sound out strategic partners and consultant
Professional services required by the council include development management, covering new and existing projects; strategic connectivity consultancy; and estate rationalisation, which covers reviewing existing assets and identifying surplus assets.
The move follows Salford’s decision to end its current contract with Urban Vision, its partnership with Capita and Galliford Try, when it expires in January 2020. As a result, planning and building control services, property, and highways and infrastructure will be brought back in-house.
The new potential strategic partners will sit alongside these in-house functions.
Early market engagement is expected to run until the end of the year, and although the council said the exact value of works to be procured was “unknown at this time”, it would be looking to progress the project early next year.
Mayor of Salford Paul Dennett said: “We are looking to strengthen and enhance our partnerships to support future development work as the city continues to grow.
“Our population is forecast to reach 300,000 by 2040 – which this means we need an extra 1,800 homes each and every year. And we have one of the strongest residential markets outside of London.
“The strategic partnership can make sure that local people can be connected to the growth of the city so it does not runaway without our involvement. We want to shape places and strengthen and diversify our economic base for future generations to benefit from.”
