Ryder writes EA design guide

Chester-based Ryder Landscape Consultants has completed the Access for All Design Guide for the Environment Agency.

Between April 2008 and April 2009 more than 32 million people visited a river, lake or canal over which the Environment Agency has influence.

The guide encourages the consideration of access from the outset of any new development or ongoing management programme with the aim of making it a core consideration at all times. It includes technical information on a range of access features, such as steps and ramps.

David Jordan, director of operations at EA, said: "This Access for All Design Guide helps us towards our commitment by setting out a balance between our operational needs, the safe management of flood protection assets, rights of way and accessible environments. Enclosed within the guide are a variety of standard approaches and design advice covering a range of features we frequently construct."

The EA's remit includes developing recreational access to water. It is also a statutory consultee on a wide range of planning applications.

The EA hopes the guide will become a useful tool to a wider audience of consultants and individuals involved in the development of access to the external environment.
