Russells completes for Joy Global

Russells Construction has completed work on a new £10m, 82,000 sq ft facility at Logistics North near Bolton for mining equipment manufacturer Joy Global.

A year-long build programme saw Russells use a traditional steel frame and cladding construction system to create a 43,300 sq ft production and testing floor and 38,500 sq ft of office space. The building has achieved a BREEAM rating of “Very Good”.

Doug Kiser, Joy’s global director of facilities and asset management, said: “This is a purpose-built facility that provides an opportunity to implement new and more efficient systems and processes, enhancing our capabilities in terms of product development, testing, manufacture and delivery,” he said.

The professional team included designers from APL Architects and engineers from Healy Consulting and was tasked with creating a building that can withstand robust product testing.

Andrew Russell, director at Russells, said: “There were challenges in the early part of the project, when bad weather made construction of the testing pits particularly difficult. But the team took everything in its stride and delivered the new facility on time and within budget as usual.”

The new Logistics North facility will be the UK hub for Joy Global’s JoySmart Solutions branding, offering data-driven connected products and systems.

Logistics North is being developed by Harworth Estates. Since gaining outline planning consent in December 2013, over 1.5 million sq ft has been built out.
