Royal Mail acquires Blackpool plot

Royal Mail Estates has acquired the long leasehold on a 3.34-acre development site at Blackpool Technology Park from Blackpool Council.

The cleared Hawking Place site will be used for a 25,000 sq ft Royal Mail delivery office to serve the town and surrounding areas. Construction is due to start on site in September. The delivery company will then relocate from its current premises in Abingdon Street in August 2015.

The North West industrial team at JLL advised Royal Mail Estates on the acquisition. Blackpool Council was unrepresented.

Dan Burn, director of industrial and logistics at JLL, said: "As the boom in online retail continues to place new demands on delivery services, Royal Mail's current facilities in Blackpool are no longer fit for purpose. This deal will enable the group to move to a new purpose-built home in Blackpool while freeing-up the Abingdon Road site for a redevelopment more suited to its location in due course."
