Rochdale seeks contractors for new leisure centre

Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council is offering an £8m-£11.5m contract to develop a site on Entwistle Road into a new leisure facility.

The new leisure facility will need to include a 25-metre swimming pool, changing village, gym, sports hall, and community facilities. The 19-month contract will be for the design and construction of the facility with associated external works.

The site is located adjacent to the north of the River Roch and currently comprises of a seventy-year-old leisure centre, a disused council depot, a waste transfer station and also land acquired by Housing Market Renewal east of the site at Nile Street.

The existing centre is considered to be no longer fit for purpose and the council said that the outdated design and layout of the facilities and plant also create high running costs.

The contract will be awarded on a design and build basis, with the building layout design already agreed. Outline planning permission will be sought prior to award of contract.

Rochdale council said shortlisted applicants will be issued with the design as submitted for outline planning approval.

Deadline for submitting tenders is 12pm on Friday 19 March.
