Rochdale Kidney Care Centre to get council backing

Rochdale Council is set to back the construction of a Kidney Care Centre in Heywood, a satellite site of Salford Royal Hospital which will provide a 10,000 sq ft kidney dialysis treatment facility.

The development will replace the current facility at Rochdale Infirmary, which the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust said was too small and with no scope for expansion. The new facility will also mean that hospital stays will be reduced due to more dialysis units being made available for patients.

Focussed on a 10,000 sq ft building, the project is set to be built on a site off Schofield Street and Mount Street in Heywood, currently home to a derelict mill building which has been vacant for around four years. This will be demolished to make way for the care centre.

The facility is expected to employ around 25 full-time members of staff as well as supporting roles for consultants, dieticians, drivers, and consultants. Internally, there will be 24 treatment stations alongside four consulting tooms and other facilities.

Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services will operate the dialysis facilities at the building; the company is the largest provider of renal care in the world and also operates sites in Oldham and Stockport, as well as the Trust’s existing facility at Rochdale Infirmary.

The proposals have been designed by architect CTD for the Trust, and a planning application was first submitted in December 2016.

Although the site is earmarked as employment land in the area’s Local Plan, Rochdale Council planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval when the local authority’s planning committee meets on 3 September.

Planners said the site had been unsuccessfully marketed for employment use for a period of around six years, and added: “The development proposal would not impact on the ability of existing businesses to operate satisfactorily and the scheme would represent the redevelopment of the site, enabling reinvestment that would provide jobs, and in this particular case highly-skilled employment, within the borough.”

The professional team on the project also includes Knights as planner.
