Retirement living replaces council offices

Galliford Try Partnerships has started the demolition of a former Cheshire County Council base in Northwich on behalf of Your Housing Group.

YHG is funding a £11.8m retirement living complex that will be built in its place, delivering 70 homes for the over-55s, designed by Pozzoni.

Due for completion in spring 2021, the one and two-bedroom apartments on Watling Street will offer independent living for both shared ownership and outright sale, in a scheme known as Water’s Cross.

The site has been vacant since 2016, and planning permission for the retirement living project was granted in November 2018. Your Housing Group secured the site in March 2019.

Cheshire West & Chester Council’s cabinet member for housing, regeneration and growth, Cllr Richard Beacham said: “The new development will totally transform that part of the town and will be a very welcome addition.

“With the building having stood vacant since 2016, the land sale was an important part of the wider redevelopment of Northwich, and the money is being reinvested in the town as part of the masterplan for Weaver Square.”

PSP Cheshire West & Chester LLP, a partnership between Cheshire West & Chester Council and Public Sector Plc, is managing the Weaver Square masterplanning process on behalf of the council.

Demolition and ground works on the site will take up to three months with construction set to begin late summer.
