Resi approved at former Northwich council office

Galliford Try Partnerships’ £10.8m proposal for a former council office site on Watling Street, Northwich, has been given the go-ahead by Cheshire West & Chester Council.

The plans for 70 apartments for over-55s will include 16 one-bedroom and 54 two-bedroom apartments. The demolition of the old buildings is to start in the New Year, followed by a development that will include a bistro among ground floor uses.

Euan Kellie Property Solutions provided planning advice, while architect Pozzoni has designed the scheme, which GTP described as a contemporary reflection of the black and white timber-framed buildings synonymous with Northwich.

A previous proposal had been refused in December 2017 on design grounds, and the revised scheme has looked to address the local vernacular with the introduction of pitched roofs and more patterned brickwork.

The office space had housed Cheshire County Council operations, but was departed by council staff in 2011, while an adult day care centre based there was closed in 2016.

The site sits opposite the Weaver Square shopping centre – which CWAC has this year launched plans to overhaul – and is adjacent to the Northwich Memorial Court, which houses a gym, swimming pool and theatre.

Brendan Blythe, managing director at Galliford Try Partnerships in the region, said: “Throughout the consultation and design development process we have worked closely with local people, historians and planning experts to make sure we deliver a landmark scheme to will help to improve the look and feel of Northwich town centre on this brownfield site.”
