ReBlackpool proposes £14m wedding venue

ReBlackpool, the urban regeneration company, has submitted a planning application for a building on the seafront to host weddings and civil ceremonies.

The £14.3m development would be built on the Tower Festival Headland close to North Pier.

Doug Garrett, chief executive of ReBlackpool, said: "Many marriages will have started with a holiday romance in Blackpool so we're continuing that tradition in a very modern setting.

"The innovative building design will be a stunning addition to the landscape and construction has been planned to reduce carbon emissions, so we're bringing more fun to Blackpool responsibly."

The design by dRMM Architects features a timber frame clad in gold coloured, stainless steel shingles.

Funding of £2.7m has been awarded by the North West Development Agency towards the cost of the building. Construction work will commence in late 2009 if plans are approved. Completion is due by the end of November 2010. The first ceremonies could take place in early 2011.
