ReBlackpool boss confident of smooth transition
Regeneration progress in Blackpool will not be hampered by the handover from urban regeneration company ReBlackpool to the new body for Fylde Coast, according to Doug Garrett.
Garrett, CEO of ReBlackpool, said: "The transition from the URC to the EDC should be a smooth one, with regeneration work in Blackpool to continue at the same speed – alongside the planned renovation of the entire Fylde Coast.
"ReBlackpool has already transformed the Blackpool coastline but there's still along way to go for Blackpool's tourist and business industries and I'm convinced this will happen in the near future under the EDC."
ReBlackpool was formed in 2003 with a remit to ensure long-term economic and social prosperity for the town, alongside ongoing plans to build commercial opportunities to enhance year round trade and employment.
Here's a recap of some of the completed and planned projects so far:
- Southern Gateway modernised section of the sea front completed in 2004
- Spanish Steps have been built at every access point to the beach, offering new defences with a design life of at least 100 years
- Comedy Carpet designed by Gordon Young will feature famous catchphrases delivered by the comedy performers that have helped to make Blackpool famous
- Seafront Wedding Chapel should be ready to host its first wedding in spring 2011
- St Chads and Waterloo: skateboard and BMX bowl and a huge adventure playground
- Talbot Gateway: £220m project to create new business district next to the rail station, planning approved this week
On April 1 2010 ReBlackpool will be wound up and replaced by the Fylde Coast Economic Development Company. Garrett is in talks with local stakeholders over a new role in the town but will not be part of the EDC board.
