Proposals revealed for £100m twin Airport City hotels
A £100m two-hotel development including a Hilton Garden Inn and a Hampton By Hilton opposite Manchester Airport’s railway station is to open by February 2019, subject to planning consent.
The proposals by architect Leach Rhodes Walker and developer Versant Hotels, which has a gross development value of around £100m, includes two nine-storey blocks, one housing a 375-bedroom hotel and the other housing a 254-bed hotel on the three-acre site, just off the Airport Spur road.
The former, made up of two linked blocks, will be operated by Hilton Garden Inn and will have a 2,300 sq ft sky bar and meeting room at rooftop level, while the latter will be branded as a Hampton By Hilton.
The Garden Inn will also have around 4,300 sq ft of conference facilities, a 2,200 sq ft courtyard, and a fitness centre on the first floor.
The Hampton By Hilton, in keeping with its branding as a limited service hotel, will not have a rooftop bar, and will have rooms up to and including the eighth floor. Accommodation will be provided over a single block, while parking for both hotels will be situated to the east of the site.
According to the developer, the project is scheduled to complete in February 2019. A planning application has now been submitted to Manchester City Council for consideration.
The professional team also includes Aecom as highways, structural, services and sustainability engineer; Arcadis as cost consultant; Manchester Airports Group as planner; and Planit IE as landscape architect.

A planning application was previously lodged for a 350-bed hotel on the site with associated parking in 2014, and approved the same year. A planning amendment in 2015 changed the internal layout, but these plans were ultimately never progressed.
Versant, based in Winchester and headed up by developer Frank Mountain, has plans for a series of projects primarily in London and the South, including the £70m Compass House, an office-to-residential conversion. The company purchased the building from Hermes Global Investors for £23.5m in 2014.
